CHARACTER NOTES:
Darach McLain
Staff
Temporo-Spatial Engineer
"Portal Wrangler"
Summary:
The gatekeeper, the keymaster, the one who knocks: Darach McLain is the Green Cat's ornery doorman. The science of Door travel is as varied and imprecise as the very multiverse it exploits, and it takes a deft touch to control. Or at least that's what those namby-pambys at the fancy "Engineering" schools will tell you. Darach prefers a more... Unorthodox approach. After coming to the Green Cat under sudden and unpleasant circumstances he managed to throw together a set of Tempro-Spatial manipulator tools out of an old oscilloscope, an egg timer, and a handheld voltmeter. He hits them with hammers when they break.
He can usually be found at the bar between shows, and behind the scenes during.
History:
From the time of his youth in the Aldebaran system Darach displayed a remarkable aptitude for science and tech, especially in the areas of the theoretical. When he graduated from secondary school his scores gave him his pick of higher education. He chose to pursue the budding science of Inter-Universal Transportation as his field of study and excelled at it beyond all expectation. He even penned an entry on the subject in the Encyclopedia Galactica. Despite this early success he managed to get himself expelled from two universities and a community college by the time he was 23 due to problems of unruliness and public inebriation. Finally, after three years hopping from starship to starship working repairs he finally found himself a steady job. This job was unfortunately as the chief mechanic on a poorly manned pirate vessel.
Darach was captured by local authorities during a laughably idiotic attempt to raid the tourist planet of Han Wavel and was sentenced to death. By a massive and utterly improbable stroke of luck, the door to Darach's execution chamber was suddenly opened by a strange man in a suit before his captors had a chance to throw him in. The man in the suit looked extremely confused and muttered something about "Still getting the transitional physics wrong" and needing "a damn mechanic for this stuff". It was at that moment that Darach noticed that what had previously been a concrete chamber was now a posh office. It didn't take him a second to put two and two together. A raised hand and a silly amount of impressive-sounding techno-jargon later the man in the suit was handing money to the still very confused guards for Darach's non-existent bail. The money seemed to satisfy, though, and naught moments later he began his ongoing stint as the Door operator at one of the most interesting nightclubs in the multiverse.
